Filing an EV insurance claim follows the same broad path as a gas-car claim, with three important EV-specific additions: battery inspection, OEM-certified routing and high-voltage safety holds.

First hour

  • Move to a safe location if the vehicle is drivable and there is no smell of coolant, no unusual warning light, and no visible underbody damage. If any of those are present, do not drive — wait for a flatbed.
  • Call 911 if there are injuries. Otherwise, file a police report for any incident with more than minor cosmetic damage.
  • Photograph all four corners of the vehicle, the underbody if safely accessible, and the other vehicle's license plate and damage.

First 24 hours

  • Notify your insurer through their app or claims line. Most major carriers offer 24/7 claims intake.
  • Request an OEM-certified collision center for the inspection. You have the right to choose your repair shop in most US states.
  • Take a screenshot of your battery state-of-health from the vehicle app if available.

First week

  • Receive your inspection report. Review the battery section carefully — any "recommend full pack replacement" note will dominate the total-loss math.
  • Request a rental car if your policy includes it. EVs often have longer repair durations; ask for an EV rental if available.
  • Negotiate the settlement if your vehicle is declared a total loss. Carriers typically open with an offer below market — counter with three comparable VIN-specific listings.

Key takeaways

  • Do not drive after any suspected underbody impact.
  • Insist on an OEM-certified collision center.
  • Document your battery state-of-health before any repair.
  • Counter low total-loss offers with VIN-specific comps.

Frequently asked questions

Q.How long does an EV claim take?

Routine collision claims average 21 days for EVs vs 14 for gas cars, driven primarily by parts lead times and the battery inspection step. Total-loss claims average 28–35 days.
